Character analysis

Describe three key characters and how they change in the novel-

Nick-

As The Great Gatsby opens, Nick Carraway, the story’s narrator remembers his upbringing and the lessons his family taught him. The novel opens up with an important quote from Nick’s father “just remember Nick whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” With nick growing up in the upper midwest (minnesota or wisconsin) Nick had a very strong values towards his upbringing such as being worked hard, perseverance, justice but as well as these values came a lot of opportunity. The great gatsby is told through the eyes of nick, through his thoughts and perceptions. Nick also plays a huge role in the in the novel as he is the one telling us the story as well as being a part of it. We see him change throughout the novel showing a lot of personal integrity which shows his sense of right and wrong helps to elevate him above the others. A quote from nick showing his understanding of others would be a quote about gatsby “he stretched out his arms towards the dark water in a curious way… involuntarily i glanced seaward- and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.” Nick observed gatsby admiring the green light at the end of the doc and then soon realized that the green light on the end of the doc had great value to gatsby. This quote states gatsby and nick’s relationship. nick understands gatsby in a way that no one else does. gatsby is quite lonely without daisy he has no one and that’s why he is so close to nick.

daisy buchanan-

nick’s cousin and the person gatsby loves despite her charm daisy buchanan is a selfish, shallow and in fact hurtful. Gatsby has fallen in love with daisy or at least the idea of her. at the start of the novel gatsby does anything to bring daisy to his house throws multiple outrageous parties hoping she would one day show in many senses, to see her be worthy of his devotion. 5 years ago daisy fell in love with gatsby and promised that she would wait for him. then a powerful wealthy young man tom buchanan asked daisy to marry him and she decided to stop waiting for gatsby and marry him. she now lives across the harbor from gatsby in a beautiful east egg mansion on long island daisy also had a child with tom called pammy. A quote from daisy during the novel “i’m glad it’s a girl. And i hope she’ll be a fool- that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world a beautiful little fool.” this quote shows daisy’s personality, Daisy is in love with money, ease, and material luxury she pretends that she’s happy she’s had a girl, but she’s not. Girls of any class seem to be the losers in this world back in the 1920s , and Daisy, as you could imagine, isn’t psyched about that.

Jay gatsby-

the main character in this novel jay gatsby is a young man around 30 years old who rose from a poor childhood to becoming a very wealthy man. he strived to be the wealthy man he is today and his motivation for his wealth was daisy who he meet and fell in love with before going away to fight in world war 1

  1. A good start Meg.
    – Look to fix the mechanical errors
    – Address how and why Nick’s “non-judgemental” nature is challenged and how he deals with this.
