Intro-
Throughout the well known novel of the great gatsby by f.scott fitzgerald we follow the story of nick carraway the novel’s narrator through his summer in new york. We see Nick go through three different settings during the novel that are segregated into 3 different settings east egg, west egg and the valley of ashes.

Body paragraph 1-
S- Throughout the novel the valley of ashes represents the failure of the american dream.

E- the valley of ashes is a small town in between east egg and west egg on also on the way through to new york. it is a dark We see this through the novel as myrtle and wilson are segregated from the others because they live their lives believing in the american dream, showing their hard work and determination but still receive nothing in return.

X- While driving through, Nick describes the Valley of Ashes as “a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take take the farms of ashes and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally with a transcendent effort, of ash grey men, who move dimly and already crumbling through the powder air.”

E- as grey men of ash move dimly through a horrible stretch of road that goes through an area covered in dust and ash from the nearby factories.
