NCEA English 3.4 Writing Folio – Critical Review of Nineteen Eighty-Four – Final
The novel Nineteen Eighty- Four George Orwell informs his readers of what the future holds for us with our world becoming almost as corrupt as he has described in the novel through distinct power, control, and manipulation. As readers, we became aware of Orwell’s attention towards what he had suggested would happen further throughout the rest of the novel.
Orwell creates a dystopian society throughout the novel of Nineteen Eighty-Four where the community of Oceania is controlled through the thought of fear. The party pushes its ideas through physical control of the minds of the Oceanian community, constructed to destroy anyone’s personal thought. With the pressure constantly haunting the citizens through the thought of the giant Telescreen in the individual’s bedroom, repeating a constant appeal of propaganda. Through this idea, it now creates an illusion that when the party comes across a failure, through the power it becomes a success. In the novel, we review that the Telescreen also supervises the individual’s behavior with an uninterrupted reminder that “Big Brother is watching you” that the authorities analyzing every action, thought and breath. Constantly looking out for signs of falseness, and with this pressure, it forces people’s nerves to become their biggest enemy. Through this time most individuals let fear take over their body Winston however, did not. Orwell disagreed with the rules of surveillance and privacy throughout Oceania. While placing a Telescreen in the house it enforces instant invasion of privacy, as well as the feeling of becoming unsafe to process your own thoughts at home. We have lines that nobody should cross because that is where our self-esteem is found. Our privacy it where our balance is contained and where our valuable identity resides. The party doesn’t take into account what the citizens feel or believe and their main focus is to keep full control on everything in Oceania.
Private space was no longer existing throughout Oceania after it had successfully been destroyed with the giant two-way Telescreens, and microphones that almost felt as if they were following you each and every step you took. The party strived to achieve full control over everything and everyone which they had, they tried to prevent men and woman from the system of how much control the party has. They were able to keep men and woman from forming relationships knowing the uncontrollable bond that can be formed and could wreck the system of how much control the party has. They were able to keep men and woman forming that bond through the power of fear through their corrupt imagination that they had been brainwashed to not only believe but also accept. In the book, it quotes “Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.” this is a representation of how brainwashed the individuals of Oceania has become allowing their minds to be torn to pieces and returned however the party chose.
Another way that the party manipulated and brainwashed the citizens of Oceania is by creating their own official language that went by the name of newspeak. This language consisted of abbreviations that could replace the use of the english language. Newspeak is engineered to remove even the possibility of rebellious thoughts containing no negative terms. For example, the only way to express the meaning of “bad” is through the word “ungood.” Something extremely bad is called “double plus ungood.” We can see danger start to arise along with this new language that the party has created letting new words sink into our speech becoming what Orwell called ‘Newspeak’. Newspeak became a conscious replacement of one set of words in the language replacing another. There was a purpose behind this new language, it was not only to provide a specific amount of expression for the world to view but to make all other forms of thought impossible.
The control through fear continued to work in two ways and were both just as effective, we can see in the novel that power kept Oceania to obey the party was mainly manipulated through the control by fear. But the party were forced to keep threatening through their very own fear that they struggled to believe. The party lived through the fear that the citizens would learn to form an unknown bond or relationship with another individual to share individual thoughts with each other. The party led themselves to believe that they would discover a power that would override the party. This forced the party to keep eliminating any social interaction with the surveillance in order to have a full view of its citizens in order to pick up on any forbidden behavior.
No one can predict our future, although through or wells tellings of the past we find more similarities moving through today’s modern society. Controlling individuals decisions and manipulating others beliefs and thought process. There have been several decisions that have occurred due to thought of fear such as the mass shooting in Christchurch early this year, not only was it a terrible experience for the individuals that had to experience and see this moment through their own eyes, but not long after the incident occur there was video footage released on the internet. The power the shooter had was not only through the gun he held but through the emotion that took over his body, he now had all of Christchurch under his control due to their own fear of being the next victim. Orwell warned his people about the pressure take with every action being held under surveillance, we don’t even have to try to compare that to our world today. In our world through social media and web searching our personal information is spread through only a couple taps on a keyboard, we underestimate the power of technology today and how easy it is for someone to get so much of our personal information without even meeting us in person. this is another example of where we are controlled through fear of being exposed in a way we are not comfortable with. as individuals in society today, we choose to look past Orwell’s warning and continue to be manipulative through modern technology.
Throughout the novel, we witness the citizens of Oceania to be stripped of their emotion, where the government is controlling the humanity of the citizens hoping that it will control each and every individual of Oceania. In our world today we are encouraged to express yourself compared to Nineteen Eighty-Four where the citizens did there best to hide all emotion and wellbeing to avoid expressing their individuality which could get them in serious trouble. The citizens were manipulated through the thought of fear being afraid of what would happen to them if they got caught sharing any type of emotion with another individual. It was said by George Orwell in the novel “Perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood.” this quote represents the emotions the citizens were unable to express themselves, such as when Winston tries to make new relationships it didn’t matter if they were friends, enemies they would be appreciated as long as they could be talked to. Winston did not want to be loved but wanted to be understood giving Winston the emotion of being accepted and understood was better than being lovers. This is due to when Winston felt understood her knew it was sharing a real emotion. Because love was so fake during this time he could feel no affection from sharing love was forced upon him and his wife, fake emotion is not a real emotion. this made it hard for citizens to accept themselves for who they are, not knowing how to truly loves someone reflects on how you love and respect yourself. Unfortunately for anyone who did start to accept themselves for who they were and started to share any emotion with another individual it automatically got shut down by the party due to some suspicion. The thought of fearing what would happen to you when the party takes you away overtook the love people had and instead of growing love from within yourself to share with other people it started to die. the citizens struggled to find themselves in life and find their own purpose because of the distraction that the party had you under surveillance 24/7. in our world today we are grateful to be surrounded by people who love themselves and each other for who they are as a person and the emotion they share, but we still find similarities with Nineteen Eighty-Four. instead of getting distracted by the thought of fear through being exposed under the pressure of heavy surveillance and invasion of privacy we are distracted through the thought of fear comparing yourself to others. there is so much influence of what we should look like, eat like, dress like and act like from famous models that are all over every magazine and all through social media. it is our way of society trying to manipulate us into spending money on the newest weight loss pills, teeth whitening kit, hair straighteners and many more.
Nineteen Eighty-Four challenged the thought through fear which has become parallel to our world today our lives are manipulated through the thought of fear. We often find yourself getting stuck in our comfort zone where we feel safe and often don’t want to leave it due to the thought of fear holding us back even though most times if we can leave the comfort zone with confidence we are able to achieve greatness. Our comfort zone is our enemy and one of the biggest fears I can think of is when we live life trying to stay comfortable, although life will send us more and more discomfort. Because people are so concerned about staying comfortable and fear what it’s like to become uncomfortable they keep struggling, we come here to grow and when we don’t make yourself uncomfortable life gives us plenty of reasons and opportunities to get out of our comfort zone. We fail to achieve greatness as a society when we choose to stay in our comfort zone, from Orwell’s warning of Nineteen Eighty-Four need to use this opportunity to get out of our comfort zone as face our fear to grow
This starts well, but you are very behind. Have you missed some of the periods so far?
